WE ARE TOLD NO ONE WAS HURT. DANA: PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN CLEMSON ARE RAISING CONCERNS OVER AN ORDINANCE. THE SOCI HOST RESPONSIBILITY ORDINANCE LETS CLEMSON POLICE DOME A SOCIAL GATHERING OUT OF CONTROL. NIGEL: WYFF NEWS 4’S KYLIE JONES TELLS US ABOUT THE CONFUSION OVER HOW COVID-19 COULD IMPACT THE ORDINANCE. KYLIE, WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING? KYLIE: NIGEL, DANA, GOOD MORNING. WELL, WITH COVID-19 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN PLACE, STUDENTS AND RESIDENTS ARE CONCERNED THIS COULD LEAD TO EVEN MORE POTENTIAL VIOLATIONS. AND NOW CITATIONS ARE GIVEN ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS, WHICH PEOPLE SAY JUST LEAVES ROOM FOR EVEN MORE CONFUSION. NOW, THE SOCIAL HOST RESPONSIBILITY ORDINANCE DEFINES AN OUT-OF-CONTROL SOCIAL GATHERING AS ONE WHERE PUBLIC SAFETY, HEALTH, PEACE, AND WELFARE IS THREATENED. CLEMSON POLICE CHIEF JORGE CAMPOS SAYS THEY LOOK AT STATE GUIDANCE AND THE GOVERNOR’S ORDER ABOUT SOCIAL GATHERINGS. FROM JANUARY 1 TO FEBRUARY 16, POLICE HAVE GIVEN OUT 22 CITATIONS IN VIOLATION OF THIS ORDINANCE. CLEMSON STUDENTS ARGUE THE REASONS FOR RESPONDING TO THESE CALLS HAVE BEEN UNCLEAR. THEY ALSO POINT TO THE UNIVERSITY’S .4% COVID POSITIVITY RATE THIS SEMESTER. AND ACCORDING TO THE ORDINANCE, FINES START AT $200 AND GO UP WITH EACH VIOLATION. STUDENTS AT CLEMSON UNIVERSITY COULD ALSO FACE REPERCUSSIONS WITH THE UNIVERSITY IF THEY’RE IN VIOLATION OF THIS ORDINANCE. DANA AND NIGEL? DANA: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT. NIGEL: JARRED HILL IS IN OUR EXCLUSIVE WASHINGTON BUREAU WITH MORE ON WHERE THE PLAN GOES FROM HERE. JARRED: NIGEL AND DANA, THE PACKAGE PASSED YESTERDAY NOW SETTING IT UP FOR A VOTE IN THE FULL HOUSE CHAMBER. BUT THIS IS DESPITE THE FACT THAT STILL THERE’S NO BIPARTISAN SUPPORT. >> IT IS THE WRONG TIME FOR THIS PLAN, BECAUSE THE SHEER SIZE OF THE SPENDING HAS EVEN DEMOCRAT ECONOMISTS QUESTIONING THE WISDOM. JARRED: EITHER WAY, THE $1.9 TRILLION PACKAGE IS EXPECTED TO SAIL THROUGH IN THE HOUSE. THERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS, THOUGH, ABOUT HOW IT’S GOING TO DO IN THE SENATE WITH A FEW DEMOCRATS ALREADY OBJECTING TO PROVISIONS LIKE THE GRADUAL MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE. THIS COMES AS THE WHITE HOUSE MARKED A TRAGIC MILESTONE LAST NIGHT. 500,000 AMERICANS KILLED BY COVID-19. DESPITE VIRUS TRENDS MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, THERE ARE STILL CONCERNS ABOUT THE RISE OF VARIANTS TO THE DISEASE IN THE U.S. THE FDA PLANS TO ADAPT VACCINES, TESTS AND THERAPEUTICS TO DEAL WITH THOSE. ALL THE WHILE, PRESIDENT BIDEN IS PUSHING A MESSAGE OF HOPE. >> LET’S THIS NOT BE A STORY OF HOW FAR WE FELL BUT OF HOW FAR WE CLIMBED BACK UP. WE CAN DO THIS. JARRED: GOING BACK TO THAT RELIEF BILL, CONGRESS IS ON A PRETTY TIGHT DEADLINE TO PASS THIS IF THEY DON’T WANT CERTAIN PROVISIONS TO LAPSE, BECAUSE AS OF NOW, THOSE EXPIRE IN THE MIDDLE OF MARCH. REPORTING IN WASHINGTON, I’M JARRED HILL FOR WYFF NEWS 4. JARRED: JARED, THANK YOU. MORE HELP IS ON THE WAY FOR PEOPLE STRUGGLING TO PAY RENT. BUSINESSES WITH FEWER THAN 20 EMPLOYEES WILL HAVE AN EXCLUSIVE TWO-WEEK WINDOW TO APPLY FOR FUNDING. IN MARCH NEW RULES WILL ALLOW MORE BUSINESSES TO PARTICIPATE. DANA: THE SUPREME COURT HAS AGREED TO HEAR A CHALLENGE ON A TRUMP ADMINISTRATION ABORTION RULE NIGEL: IT BARS HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS THAT GET TITLE 10 FUNDING FROM REFERRING PATIENTS FOR ABORTIONS. TITLE 10 IS A FEDERAL PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES RESOURCES LIKE CONTRACEPTION, BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER SCREENINGS AND TESTING FOR SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES. DANA: A SUPREME COURT RULING ALLOWS THE MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEY TO HAVE ACCESS TO FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S TAX RETURNS. PROSECUTORS ARGUED THEY NEED THOSE RETURNS FOR THE GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION INTO ACCUSED HUSH MONEY PAYMENTS. GRAND JURY SECRECY RULES WILL STILL KEEP THE DOCUMENTS FROM BECOMING PUBLIC. NIGEL: THE CHEROKEE NATION IS ASKING JEEP TO STOP USING ITS TRIBE’S NAME ON ITS SUV’S. JEEP SAYS ITS VEHICLE NAMES HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY CHOSEN TO CELEBRATE NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLE FOR THEIR NOBILITY, PROWESS AND PRIDE. BUT THE PRINCIPAL CHIEF OF THE CHEROKEE NATION SAYS HAVING THEIR NAME PLASTERED ON THE SIDE OF A CAR DOESN’T HONOR THEM EVEN IF IT COMES FROM A WELL-INTENDED PLACE.
