Columbus woman discovers she has dozens of half-siblings

McKenzie Cooper has known she was conceived using a sperm donor since she was a teenager. But she only recently discovered how large her family tree is.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — McKenzie Cooper remembers being roughly 12 years old and sitting atop the school monkey bars, as the ‘cool kids’ did, and explaining how artificial insemination works.

“It’s been a very normal part of my life, a very normal part of my childhood,” she said.

After all, she grew up with two moms. As she puts it, the math would not have added up if a sperm donor were not involved.

Weekly food truck festival launches in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood

DENVER — A new weekly event called the Colorado Boulevard Food Truck Hub will officially launch in Denver’s Northeast Park Hill neighborhood on Thursday.

The event will have two main focuses: feeding residents in Northeast Park Hill (a historic food desert) and fighting youth gun violence.

Every week the Food Truck Hub organizers, Mile High Festivals, will work with other community partners to provide meal vouchers to low-income families.

Florida 7-year-old shot by younger sibling while caregiver slept, deputies say

SOUTHPORT, Fla. (WFLA) — A 32-year-old woman is facing several charges in Florida after deputies say a child in her care was shot by a younger sibling.

According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home in Southport around 2 a.m. Thursday for a medical emergency. When they got to the scene, deputies say they found a 7-year-old child with a gunshot wound, bleeding on the bathroom floor and being held by a caregiver.

Brazil begins mass vaccine study in poor Rio neighborhood

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian health authorities on Thursday began the mass immunization of Rio de Janeiro’s Mare neighborhood in a novel bid to control COVID-19 in a poor community while studying vaccine effectiveness and the prevalence of worrisome variants.

The bayside Mare complex is comprised of more than a dozen so-called favelas and home to some 130,000 people, and the study is Brazil’s first to target a low-income area. The Brazilian researchers leading the effort aren’t aware of another elsewhere in the world that has specifically focused on slums.

Rio is currently providing first vaccine doses to 34-year-olds.

7-year-old shot by younger sibling, Florida woman arrested

BAY COUNTY, Fla. – A 7-year-old was shot by a younger sibling in Florida, and the caregiver has been arrested.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the home in Southport just before 2 a.m. Thursday. Deputies said they arrived on scene and found the 7-year-old bleeding on the bathroom floor, being held by the caregiver, 32-year-old Kayla Tully.

Bay County deputies said they immediately administered emergency care and EMS arrived to take the child to a local hospital.
